Panelist Biographies – Industry Panel

Dr. Ivo Maljević (Moderator)

Dr. Ivo Maljević is a principal technology architect within TELUS’ technology strategy team, where he focuses on a long-term vision for radio access network, spectrum strategy and technology standardization. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Toronto, Canada, in 2004, in electrical engineering.

Peying Zhu

Dr. Peiying Zhu is senior vice president of wireless research and Huawei Fellow. She is currently leading 5G and beyond wireless research and standardization, focusing on identifying new emerging technologies and research directions, and defining a long term vision for future wireless system.

Jeff LaFrenz

Jeff LaFrenz is a serial entrepreneur with over 30 years’ experience in technology commercialization. He is currently President and co-founder of VizworX, a multi-award winning software solutions company focused on the development of enterprise-class digital experiences for clients in energy, construction, agriculture, government, defence and aerospace.

Dr. Rainer Iraschko

Dr. Rainer Iraschko has worked in the telecommunications sector for over 25 years. As Principal Technology Architect at TELUS he is responsible for identifying emerging technologies and ICT trends, and fostering the creation of innovative technologies of interest and value to TELUS including Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence.

Jad Berberi

Jad Berberi is a Senior Manager, Technology Strategy and Business Development at Samsung Canada, where he focuses on Spectrum Strategy and long-term wireless solution. He received his Bachelor Engineering degree from the American University of Beirut, in 2002, in Computer and Communication Engineering.

Dr. Benoît Pelletier

Benoît Pelletier received his Ph.D. degree in 2007 from McGill University, Canada and is currently Principal Designer at InterDigital Canada Ltée. He has been contributing to the standardization efforts for HSPA+, LTE and more recently to 5G NR mobile wireless systems, specializing in L1/L2 protocol design. His role further includes technical co-supervision of collaborative academic research projects with local universities.
